"Summer in a Jar" A Sensory Time Capsule
This week is about celebration, gratitude and reflection. We also learn to manage emotions during this transition to a new school year. Enjoy this fun activity.
What we do: In our summer camp activity during this last week, we will go on a mindful walk together on our retreat property here at the Lotus Heart Centre (at home you can walk to your favorite summer spot—the backyard, a park, the beach).
I let the children know that we will be collecting small items that remind us the season: a smooth stone, a feather, a shell, a fallen leaf, a flower petal. Each child will have a jar and place the items inside. We can also decide to write down our favorite summer memories on small slips of paper and add them to the jar. I will assist the younger children with this task.

Our Mindful element: As we collect each item, we engage the senses.
"Feel how smooth this stone is. Smell this pinecone. Listen to the crunch of these leaves." This practice encourages presence and gratitude for the summer that has passed.
**Later we can create a list of things that we are grateful for from the summer camp experiences we shared together. I will handwrite this list on a big board while the kids take turns sharing.
For example:
The most important thing is to create moments of joy and connection that will become the final, brilliant chapter of the children's summer camp story.
